OMF in Limehouse Basin. An incredible place, it's described as "The Jewel in the British Waterways Crown", because narrowboats share moorings with ocean-going yachts in a lovely setting. The basin is surrounded by £1m apartments, but you get to share this millionaire's paradise for £15 a night! Bargain.

The old guillotine style stop lock at Kings Norton, on the Stratford upon Avon Canal. Stop locks were put at the junctions of canals to stop one canal "stealing" the water of another. Water supplies were a problem to start with, with mill-owners often complaining that their livelihoods were threatened by canal systems taking their supplies.

Slough. Or you might say the Slough of despond. I'm used to some towns and cities not exactly making the most of their canal- or river-side amenities, but oh Slough, surely you could do better than this?

The perils of a life as a British Waterways employee. This chap came past on the Slough Arm with a tiny tab in his mouth, looking very unhappy, and no wonder. Look at the bullet-holes in cab windows. Isn't a job on the Waterways bad enough without being shot at as you work?
