John Rennie - tribute.
7th June 1761 - 4th October 1821
Millwright, Canal builder, Harbour designer, Lighthouse builder, Bridge and Aqueduct designer

The plaque on the Wyre aqueduct on the Lancaster canal.

Why this modest little aqueduct deserves a plaque to itself, yet so much of his other work goes uncelebrated is a mystery to me, but there you go. I am a big fan of this genius engineer, who worked in many areas yet was very modest. Among his other works: Plymouth Harbour; Bell Rock Lighthouse (discuss); Waterloo Southwark and London (the one transported to Arizona) Bridges; Denver Sluice modifications and the Kennet and Avon canal.
The aqueduct itself

His bridges and aqueducts all share a common look. Although this modest example is hidden away from all but the most determined onlooker, it is simple, elegant, and a thing of beauty. They don't make things like this any more do they? Concrete: don't you just love it?
